WHAT ARE HASHTAGS?
Hashtags are the easiest way to get found on Instagram. For sake of a definition, we can say, hashtags, are labels for content. By content, it could mean your videos, photos etc. It is generally used on social media to classify and group things of same interest in one place. So, for instance, if I am looking for the below category of items, I can find them under 1 or more hashtags.
1.   Laces
2.   Gele styles
3.   Party colour
4.   Lace styles
5.   Vendors
6.   Party planner
7.   Fabric seller
8.   Decorator
9.   Stylist or a fashion designer
All these can be found under the Hashtag #bellanaijaweddings,
#Owanbe UK, #OwambeUk and  asoebibella or even to shoot a little further.
What the hashtag does is actually to push your post a little further from where your engagement begun. In order words, once your content is deemed engaging and you use the right hashtag sets, that post begins to get shown to more people, other accounts begin to see it, it gets traction, some see it once, others go back to look at it again.
I recently started my personally hashtag research and it has paid off tremendously. My selections were carefully selected based on my niche and sometimes, I go outside my core and just use some popular hashtags to push my post further and probably make it viral. The joy that I get from these bursts of profile visits, likes and views are quite incredible. By the time I am done with this topic. If you are an entrepreneur looking to use Instagram as a way of making sales and reaching your audience, then you must utilise hashtags and of course, choose the right sets.
I am hopeful that some of you after reading this will eventually derive the same excitement I get when am adding my hashtags to my post each time I am on Instagram. Of course, my post must be worth engaging to make it easier and faster for the hashtags to skyrocket  likes, followings and comments.

MY HASHTAG PROCESS
·         Find out which ones your competition is using
·         Find out what your followers are using
·         Search for these hashtags
·         Search for related hashtags
·         Select and research.
·         Break them into sets of 30 each according to a niche
·         Test each to see where your post lies
·         Change or research more
·         Compile the best set
·         Choose the right mix
You are entitled to 30 hashtags per post but ensure that you do not make your sets more of the competitive ones, which doesn’t allow your posts to be seen because they are in the millions range. You must strive to ensure your post gets within the first 9 post on any hashtag.

 TYPES OF HASHTAGS
·         General hashtags: these are the singular ones that have like 900 million or a minimum of 1 million posts sitting on them, they are the popular hashtags and are also very competitive. An example of such hashtag is #cute # cool. #cool for instance has 150 million posts and for you to be seen and not get swallowed up, you need about 3k to 4k likes to get noticed on that hashtag. #cute has 503million posts. These are general hashtags and are really popular. Your post may not get very far if your post does not get viral.

·         Specific Hashtags: With specific hashtags, you are coming home a little bit, now, you are looking at demographics, locality, you are breaking it down into smaller bits to get it to your exact niche. Now #cute is quite wide, so cutting it down could be #cutekids 3.8million (large), #cutekidsfashion 2.3 million(still large), #cutekidsonly 27.8k, cutekidmodel 119k, #cutekidsofinstagram 107k, #cutekidsfashion 18.1k, #cutenaijakids 8,087k or even #cutebabiesfashion 12k posts.

The above should give you a clear idea of how this now works. Its quite easy but it needs a lot of research and collation. You keep checking for the related hashtags until you get the sets that fits your niche and also gets you massive followers and impressions.
In your set of 30 hashtags, you may only need 5 general hashtags to complete your sets, its best to use the big ones minimally. Once they are over a million, use them once in a while, until you can grow your handle enough to compete or be at par with them.
I recommend using different hashtag mixes for each photo until you can begin to get ones that give you the right reach. A lot of people who know about hashtags signup for an app called tailwind and use their hashtag finder to ease the hard work involved.
Please note. that hashtags do not kickstart your engagement. What they do is to expand your reach and push your engagement further to accounts that can see what you have posted. You must have had likes and comments for your hashtags to get fuelled up to work.
Consequently, what that means is that your hashtags will sit still, quite unproductive if your content is not encouraging.

WHY HASTAGS ARE POWERFUL?
·         It expands your reach
·         It kickstarts a process of faster engagement
·         It helps increase your profile visits
·         It increases your follower count
·         It helps you grow organically
·         It boosts your Instagram posts
·         It’s a catalyst for growth
·         They make your impressions count
·         Hashtags let the people come to you
·         It makes people that want to discover new accounts find you.
